So, I went to see one of the local High Schools' version of The Mikado last thursday.
The short version of my review: It was good! It turns out that the Vacaville School district manages to have quite the arts program. Huzzah for them!
Perhaps the Librarians could learn from them about getting corporate sponsership, but I digress.

Sadly, I did theater for way too long not to have a more complex review also.
They had trouble with their sound, but that is merely a technical issue. Their big problem was that the men's and women's choruses weren't singing loud enough.
...and I was in the third row. I wonder if the folks in the back could hear them at all.
Katisha started out a bit too high for her range, but later she was just fine and her acting was great.
I have a feeling that the actress is a serious ham. I really enjoyed her performance *and* her costume. It was wonderfully over the top.
I adored the actor who played Poo-Bah. He was perfect. A tall skinny ham with a great voice.
All of the costumes were lovely. I want a couple of the kimonos.
Nanki-Poo reminded me of my friend Remo from High school, and he had a perfectly lovely voice.
The staging was reminiscent of the Stratford (Canada) production that is my favorite, so no complaints there (apart from the one platform that doesn't seem to be as sturdy as it should be).
The Mikado could have been a bit more animated, but his little hip-wiggling dance in the finale was priceless.
Pitti-Sing and Pish-Tush seemed to be having a bit too much fun, which is exactly what I wanted to see from them. I'm thinking that the fellow who played Pish-Tush has a future as a physical commedian.
Also...did I mention that they had a live orchestra? In an orchestra pit? They also did a great job.
I'm giving this one 3 out of 4 stars for sheer enjoyment.

Tonight I'm going to see Colin Mocherie and Brad Sherwood in Davis!
